Sculpting Workshops 2017

ZimArt’s has been hosting sculpting workshops at the Rice Lake Gallery since 2006.
Each year a Zimbabwean sculptor, represented by ZimArt, is invited to Canada to be the artist-in-residence for the season. During their stay in Canada the artists lead sculpting workshops at the gallery.

The 2017 artist-in-residence is Rufaro Ngoma. Rufaro has been sculpting since his teens, he is now 35. He has led sculpting workshops in The Netherlands but this is his first visit to North America. He is an excellent artist and we are very much looking forward to his residency.

The five-day adult workshops are open to all levels of participants from beginners to experienced carvers. (Participants must be at least 18 years old.)  Registration is limited to twelve participants per workshop which allows a lot of time for one-on-one assistance and mentoring. All basic tools are provided but students can bring their own too.

The two-day introductory stone sculpting workshops will give participants the opportunity to learn the basics and see if stone sculpting is something they would like to explore in more depth in the future. Participants in the Introductory Workshops must be at least 15 years old.

Students work outside under tents, using only hand tools, and learning and applying traditional techniques for finishing and polishing the stone. Former participants have described the workshop as “a magical experience” in an “inspirational setting”.

The goal, for all the workshops, is to build on the skills which each participant brings to the experience. The primary objective is to make the creative process dynamic and challenging. You will create your own sculpture guided by the mentor/artist in a collaborative supportive environment.

The gallery has a range of Zimbabwean stone for sale, in a variety of sizes, colours and hardness, and students are able to select a piece suited to their skill level. You are also welcome to bring your own.
