Sculpting Workshops 2012 ZimArt’s has been hosting sculpting workshops at the Rice Lake Gallery since 2006. Each year a different artist from Zimbabwe is invited to be the artist-in-residence with ZimArt and during their stay in Canada they lead sculpting workshops at the gallery. All of the registration fees for the workshops go directly to the artist. The five-day adult workshops are open to all levels of participants from beginners to experienced carvers. (Participants must be at least 18 years old.) Registration is limited to ten per workshop which allows a lot of time for one-on-one assistance and mentoring. All basic tools are provided but students can bring their own too. We also offer a two-day weekend workshop for children 10 years old and up. And this year, for the first time, there a few selected dates which can be booked by either one or two students, for a workshop tailored specifically to your interests. Students work outside under tents, using only hand tools, and learning and applying traditional techniques for finishing and polishing the stone. Former participants have described the week as “a magical experience” in an “inspirational setting”. The gallery has a range of Zimbabwean stone for sale, in a variety of colours and hardness, and students are able to select a piece suited to their skill level. The five-day adult workshop registration fee is $350, payable when you register. There is also a $50 gallery use fee, payable when you attend the workshop, to help cover the gallery’s overhead in hosting the workshops. Adult Workshop one: July 16 - 20, 10 am to 5 pm, (Monday to Friday) If you are interested in receiving registration information please email info@zimart.ca
